Writing Requirements

Candidate Profile (Common)

  • Academic, Athletic and Personal Achievements (1,500 characters)
    • Please note your interests and activities in areas such as music, drama, art, community service, debate, writing, athletics, employment, or hobbies. We understand that some candidates have more opportunities for organized activities than others, but we are interested in how you spend your time outside of the classroom. Please only submit information from the past two years. Please use the “Add More” button below the first two listings if you would like to enter additional activities. If you still need more space, please use the “Additional Information” section.
    • Academic, Athletic and Personal Achievements-List or briefly describe any academic or personal achievements of which you are especially proud. Use this area to note any academic honors you have received. (1,500 characters)
  • Additional Information/Explanation (6,000 characters)
    • If you would like to provide any additional information that was not specifically requested or did not fit in the spaces provided, you may use the space below or upload a PDF (files must be under 1MB). Please only submit relevant information from the past two years. Do not upload grades, official test scores or transcripts in this section. If you have a document in a format other than PDF, you can download an official add-in for the latest versions of Microsoft Word that can convert Word documents to PDF. View the Gateway Knowledge Base article at https://www.gatewaytoprepschools.com/articles/6-creating-and-reducing-size-of-pdf-files for more information on creating PDFs. Please do not add pictures or scan printed documents. Doing so will potentially cause your file to be too large to upload.
  • Multimedia Description 1&2 (1,500 characters)
    • Please check with the school to see if they have other ways of accepting multimedia.
    • Students who have a very strong interest in a particular area are invited to submit up to two links to multimedia content. Examples of multimedia content that students have provided in the past include YouTube videos, music files, and art portfolios. Be sure to provide a description of the content in the space provided. Many schools no longer accept CDs, DVDs, videotapes or portfolios. Links are the simplest and most commonly accepted way to send multimedia to schools. NOTE: If you have more than two links you may add them to the “Additional Information” section above along with a description. Please limit additional link submissions in the “Additional Information” section to no more than three multimedia links. If your multimedia will not be available until later, do not delay in submitting your Candidate Profile now. Each school participating in the Gateway system has alternative means of accepting multimedia later in the application process. Consult each school for directions.

About Cate School

About Cate School

  • Cate School is an independent, coeducational college-preparatory boarding and day school for grades 9–12, located in Carpinteria on California’s Central Coast. Founded in 1910, it combines a rigorous academic program with a residential learning experience.
  • Cate’s mission is built around four foundational pillars: commitment, scholarship, companionship, and service. The school describes these as the qualities that create “the spirit of this place.”
  • The school seeks students who are curious, motivated, growth-oriented, and enthusiastic about living and learning in community.
  • Cate is known for blending the academic rigor traditionally associated with East Coast boarding schools with the adventurous, experiential spirit of the West Coast.
  • Located on “The Mesa,” a campus between the Santa Ynez Mountains and the Pacific Ocean, the school’s setting plays a central role in its educational philosophy.
  • Cate describes its educational goal as preparing students not just for college, but for life through intellectual growth, character development, leadership, and service.

School Is Known For

  • A Culture of Inquiry where students actively participate in learning through observation, questioning, interdisciplinary thinking, discussion, and problem-solving.
  • Inquiry-Based Learning that emphasizes curiosity, exploration, and asking meaningful questions rather than simply finding correct answers.
  • Harkness-style discussions, independent research, hands-on learning, and interdisciplinary academic experiences.
  • Place-Based Learning, using Southern California’s coastal environment as an extension of the classroom through field studies, outdoor exploration, and environmental engagement.
  • Servons (“Let Us Serve”), the school’s motto and leadership philosophy, which emphasizes service as a way of life rather than a résumé-building activity.
  • A small, intentionally close-knit boarding community where students and faculty live and learn together.
  • Strong mentorship and peer-to-peer support systems that encourage students to take ownership of their education.
  • An educational model centered on balancing quiet study, vigorous play, hard work, beauty, and virtue, language that originates from founder Curtis Cate’s vision.
  • Community service and leadership development through weekly service programs, public service initiatives, and residential responsibilities.
  • A distinctly Californian boarding-school experience shaped by outdoor learning, wellness, inquiry, and community.

Culture

  • The defining cultural concept at Cate is “The Spirit of This Place.” The school repeatedly describes this spirit as the product of commitment, scholarship, companionship, and service.
  • Relationships are at the center of school life. Students and faculty live, learn, and work together, creating deep connections and lifelong bonds.
  • Companionship is treated as a core value. The school emphasizes belonging, mutual support, accountability, and shared success.
  • Cate promotes a culture where students are known, celebrated, and supported as individuals while remaining connected to a larger community.
  • Service is viewed as leadership in action. Students are encouraged to contribute meaningfully to both campus and local communities.
  • The school highlights joy, kindness, belonging, and empathy as important elements of daily community life.
  • Diversity, equity, inclusion, and intercultural competency are considered essential components of academic excellence and responsible citizenship.
  • Students are encouraged to understand their own identities while learning from people with different cultures, experiences, and perspectives.
  • The residential environment is designed to foster independence, responsibility, interpersonal skills, and meaningful human connection.
  • Cate’s culture combines academic seriousness with a relaxed West Coast spirit, emphasizing curiosity, exploration, wellness, and balance.
  • Community traditions such as Convocations, Servons Speeches, Service Nights, and Sunset Ceremony help strengthen a shared sense of identity and belonging.
