Writing Requirements

Candidate Profile (Common)

  • Academic, Athletic and Personal Achievements (1,500 characters)
    • Please note your interests and activities in areas such as music, drama, art, community service, debate, writing, athletics, employment, or hobbies. We understand that some candidates have more opportunities for organized activities than others, but we are interested in how you spend your time outside of the classroom. Please only submit information from the past two years. Please use the “Add More” button below the first two listings if you would like to enter additional activities. If you still need more space, please use the “Additional Information” section.
    • Academic, Athletic and Personal Achievements-List or briefly describe any academic or personal achievements of which you are especially proud. Use this area to note any academic honors you have received. (1,500 characters)
  • Additional Information/Explanation (6,000 characters)
    • If you would like to provide any additional information that was not specifically requested or did not fit in the spaces provided, you may use the space below or upload a PDF (files must be under 1MB). Please only submit relevant information from the past two years. Do not upload grades, official test scores or transcripts in this section. If you have a document in a format other than PDF, you can download an official add-in for the latest versions of Microsoft Word that can convert Word documents to PDF. View the Gateway Knowledge Base article at https://www.gatewaytoprepschools.com/articles/6-creating-and-reducing-size-of-pdf-files for more information on creating PDFs. Please do not add pictures or scan printed documents. Doing so will potentially cause your file to be too large to upload.
  • Multimedia Description 1&2 (1,500 characters)
    • Please check with the school to see if they have other ways of accepting multimedia.
    • Students who have a very strong interest in a particular area are invited to submit up to two links to multimedia content. Examples of multimedia content that students have provided in the past include YouTube videos, music files, and art portfolios. Be sure to provide a description of the content in the space provided. Many schools no longer accept CDs, DVDs, videotapes or portfolios. Links are the simplest and most commonly accepted way to send multimedia to schools. NOTE: If you have more than two links you may add them to the “Additional Information” section above along with a description. Please limit additional link submissions in the “Additional Information” section to no more than three multimedia links. If your multimedia will not be available until later, do not delay in submitting your Candidate Profile now. Each school participating in the Gateway system has alternative means of accepting multimedia later in the application process. Consult each school for directions.

About Episcopal High School

About Episcopal High School

  • Episcopal High School (EHS) is an independent, coeducational, 100% boarding school located in Alexandria, Virginia. The school emphasizes a fully residential educational experience where students and faculty live and learn together on campus.
  • Founded in 1839, the school is guided by four founding principles: honor, academic distinction, spiritual growth, and community.
  • EHS’s mission is to prepare young people with the intellectual and moral courage to pursue lives of ethical leadership and service in an increasingly connected world.
  • The school views education as extending beyond academics into residential life, athletics, arts, spiritual development, leadership, and service.
  • Located just minutes from Washington, D.C., Episcopal intentionally incorporates the resources of the nation’s capital into its educational experience.
  • The school’s educational framework is centered on its Portrait of an Episcopal Graduate, which focuses on developing courageous action through the combination of intellectual courage and moral courage.

School Is Known For

  • Its distinctive 100% residential boarding model, which the school repeatedly identifies as one of its defining strengths. Relationships flourish because students and faculty live together in a fully residential community.
  • Developing students with intellectual and moral courage who are prepared for ethical leadership and service.
  • The school’s unique access to Washington, D.C., through its signature Washington Program, which creates experiential learning opportunities with government agencies, nonprofits, museums, and leading institutions.
  • Strong faculty engagement, with teachers serving as instructors, advisors, mentors, coaches, and residential community members. The school notes that approximately 90% of faculty live on campus.
  • A commitment to academic distinction while encouraging students to take intellectual risks, embrace challenges, and learn from failure.
  • Broad participation in academics, athletics, arts, leadership, and community life rather than narrow specialization.
  • A strong emphasis on character development, personal honor, ethical leadership, and spiritual inquiry.
  • Preparing students to become active citizens and forces for good in their communities and beyond.

Culture

  • EHS culture is built around nine core beliefs: Honor, Community, Curiosity, Exploration, Connection, Belonging, Empathy, Balance, and Purpose.
  • Honor is described as both a pursuit and an expectation, making integrity a central part of student life.
  • The school believes students thrive when they are known, valued, and supported, and that strong relationships are essential for both academic success and character development.
  • Curiosity is highly valued, with learning focused on the pursuit of knowledge rather than simply acquiring information. Students are encouraged to take risks and learn from failure.
  • The school promotes exploration across academics, athletics, arts, and extracurricular life so students can discover passions, interests, and personal strengths.
  • Belonging is considered essential to learning. EHS emphasizes a diverse community where students learn to understand, appreciate, and bridge differences.
  • Empathy, spiritual inquiry, and service are viewed as important pathways to self-discovery and personal growth.
  • The school stresses balance, believing that rigorous expectations should be paired with attention to students’ physical and emotional well-being.
  • Purpose is a defining value. Students are encouraged to see themselves as part of something larger than themselves and to use their talents to positively impact others.
  • Community life is intentionally close-knit because of the 100% boarding structure, fostering lifelong friendships, mentorship, and shared experiences.
